Today I ventured out and decided to make my own laundry detergent as I have heard nothing but GREAT things about it.  I was skeptical for so long in doing this as I though this would be a log drawn out experience.  Well guess I was wrong - this took less than 10 minutes to make and here's how I did it.

First off I went to Lowe's and bought a 5 gallon bucket - $5.97
Hobby Lobby Fragrance for the detergent $2.99
then off the grocery store, Food For Less - $9.87 Borax, Washing Soda and Fels Naptha

Keep in mind there are sooooooo many recipes for homemade laundry detergent, you'll just have to play with them until you get the desired mixture that is right for you.  I started out with this recipe

Grate your Fels Naptha (1 bar)
Scoop spoonful of grated Fels Naptha in boiling water 1 scoop at a time slowing stiring until a soap is dissolved

Pour dissolved Fels Naptha in 5 gallon bucket
Add 1 cup Washing Powder and 1/2 cup Borax to bucket stir until mixed completely
Add 15 drops of your favorite liquid smelly stuff

Let stand 24 hours - then use 1/2 scoop per load or 1 scoop per heavy load.  (when I say scoop I use the lid that comes with every liquid detergent or you could use something like the one pictured  below it's up to you.

Remember consistency will be lumpy, goopy and gel like - this is totally normal - just give it a good stir right before use or you could pour your contents into an old laundry detergent bottle and give it a good shake right before use.

That's it - Amazingly simple and NOT time consuming at all.  This 5 gallon bucket should last anywhere from 4-6 months depending on the amount of loads you do per day.

  1. Wow! Another one to add to my to do list!

  2. My parents have been doing this for years. Along with some friends. I make my own powdered detergent. It's even easier :)

Thanks for Stopping By and Leaving a Message - Have a Great Day!
